Sunmi is a queen. An honest to God queen. She has done every style: as a member of the group Wonder Girls, she did everything from the schoolgirl aesthetic to the 50s aesthetic. As a soloist under JYP entertainment, she did sexy comebacks and vampires. Now, as a soloist with an ever-climbing career, she does everything: high art and camp, romance and horror, cowboys and zombies.
However, Sunmi isn’t just experimenting with aesthetics – she’s expressing herself as an artist in every possible way, through both
lyrics and visuals. Sunmi recently became vocal about her struggle with her Borderline Personality Disorder.
In her own words:
“After I was diagnosed, I got treatment and medicine, and it
got better. You have to take care of those fundamentals so that
the people around you can be comfortable as well. I learned
that borderline personality disorder is often hard on the
people around you. I want the people around me to be happy
and not be hurt because of me. I want to love them, but that
also comes from something inside of me that wants to be loved
in return.”
“Borderline” shows Sunmi at her most emotional and raw. Who she is as an artist is very much influenced by who she is as a person.
