(G)I-DLE has never steered away from depicting badass women, but there’s something special about “Nxde”. “Nxde” is dedicated to two figures – Marilyn Monroe and Banksy. In the case of Marilyn, she was an incredibly intelligent and driven woman who was reduced to sex symbol and a spectacle. And in the case of Banksy, a graffiti artist willing to destroy their own work to make a point about the wealth disparity. Invoking their names at the end, along with their iconography, is a very specific decision. The film nerd in me got excited when the band also invoked images of Madonna, Lady Gaga, Satine from Moulin Rouge! and Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. All of these intelligent, generation-defining women are degraded, whether in the work itself or by the public, because of their womanhood. Again, there is a message communicated about how the audience objectifies women.
“Nxde” is the pinnacle of feminine rage.
