Brown Eyed Girls was my first K-Pop group, and for good reason. They were strong women with voices that were positively stunning. Their songs were all different, and all powerful. I found out recently that they had actually debuted without showing their faces, so people could focus on their music first, their words first. They are artists in the truest sense of the word.
So when they announced a comeback after several years where the main music video featured them as drag kings with a squad of Korean drag queens, I was there for it.
Brown Eyed Girls has never steered away from queer representation in their videos. In the video for their song “Abracadabra”, two of the members played a lesbian couple. Ga-In performed her song “Bloom” alongside Jo Kwon, who performed in drag as Ga-In. And they have always expressed their own sexualities with the most vibrant and unapologetic artistry.
“Wonder Woman” is therefore an extension of Brown Eyed Girls’ amazing career. They made their mark, and they keep making their mark with every release. They may not be promoting as much as before, but that just means it’s something to look forward to. And I always do.
